My teaching is based on building true understanding. The gains my students make are permanent. I cultivate not only mastery of the subject, but joy in it, intellectual confidence, and a pride in good craftsmanship that together form part of a general foundation for life. To achieve these goals I use every tool at my disposal -- empathy, experience, striking metaphors and images, humor, well-chosen examples, a fine-tuned sense of pace, musical dramatizations and much else. I deal with my students as whole people and seek the approach that best fits them as human beings. My clients and their families must feel totally supported--for example, I normally allow students to call for free help on a homework problem.
